Never in the history of our seven-year-old organization have we been fielding so many calls, emails, and website inquiries as we have over the past couple of weeks.

Frantic parents who’s children already struggle academically are now thrown into a sea of chaos…
Most of these children have a learning disability, which often includes a serious resistance to change.
The fact is… I’m feeling the exact same way.
Our son… who was diagnosed with both muscular dystrophy and autism has not been handling the change very well…
However, we’ve done a few things that have helped… A LOT.
Today, I’m going to discuss the top four strategies to help children with special needs through unexpected school closures.

Four Strategies To Help With Unexpected School Closures
1. Schedule
2. Consistency
3. Online Learning
4. Reading
Let’s detail the first of the four…
1. Schedule.
a. Children With Special Needs Thrive On;
i. Routine
ii. Structure
b. Classrooms across the country hold the same schedule all year
c. Have it posted
d. Work through it with your child
e. Include every second they are awake
f. Include times each event will take place
g. Include downtime (free time, iPad, etc.)
Next, let’s discuss the second strategy on the list… consistency.
2. Consistency
a. Children with special needs thrive on consistency
b. Any change will require adjustment
c. Behaviors surface when consistency lacks
d. Work THROUGH the initial shock caused by change
i. Be diligent… don’t give up
Here’s the bottom line… these two areas… both schedule and consistency cannot be left out of the success equation. It just won’t work without them. This is one area classrooms across the US have mastered… it can be done!
Next, let’s talk about online learning… in this video, I mention online learning because we are being heavily warned to stay away from people… aka social distancing due to the coronavirus.
My guess is this snapshot in time will forever change academics, and we will all shift toward an online model.
3. Online Learning
a. Many online web platforms offer self-guided learning activities
i. Check out our Facebook page for a list of these services
ii. At the time I’m making this video; Many are offering free finite memberships!
iii. Work great for self-sufficient children, or with parental guidance
b. One-On-One Expert Learning Online
i. Work one-on-one with a special education expert
1. For parents who aren’t sure how to teach the course material
2. For children who need an expert approach
ii. Often children with learning disabilities are most susceptible to severe academic regression
iii. Forced closing of schools while still requiring homework can lead to severe anxiety

The final expert strategy we have used during this long unexpected school break is reading.
It’s a fact that consistency in reading helps ALL of us continue to learn. For children with special needs… reading is crucial to their development.
4. Reading
a. Read Aloud - For children not yet able to read.
i. Helps with creativity/learning
ii. Imagination is sparked
b. Listen As Your Child Reads Aloud
i. Even take turns reading a page
c. Read the same book as your child separately
i. Ask questions after each session
ii. Builds comprehension
iii. Tests comprehension
d. Build reading time into your child’s schedule
