Le Maitre de Musique (The Music Teacher) (1988), directed by Gerard Corbiau.

Aging opera singer Joachim Dallayrac (Jose van Dam) retires from the stage and retreats to the countryside to school two young singers, Sophie (Anne Roussel) and Jean (Philippe Volter). Although the rigorous training takes its toll on both teacher and students, there is plenty of time for relationships to develop between the three. Based on their teacher's reputation, Sophie and Jean are invited to participate in a singing competition staged by Prince Scotti (Patrick Bauchau). Scotti's protégé Aracas (Marc Schreiber) is being positioned to get revenge for Scotti's defeat at the hands of Dallayrac in a similar competition many years ago. The young students - Jean & Sophie - overcome Scotti's trickery to win the competition. This scene is Sophie's triumph (she is singing Sempre Libera from the opera La Traviata (The Woman Who Goes Astray)) in the competition and this is also a major event in the upsetting of Prince Scotti's plan to have his protégé Aracas win the competition. The upset coming as a result of Jean providing the off-stage singing voice accompanying Sophie's performance.
