In August 2024, Bangladesh witnessed a seismic political shift as mass student protests ousted the long-standing government. This revolution, hailed by many as an opportunity to reform Bangladesh’s entrenched political system, has sparked debates over whether it will bring lasting change or lead to further instability in one of the world’s most populous nations. The downfall of Sheikh Hasina’s government marked the end of over a decade of Awami League rule, but the path ahead for Bangladesh remains uncertain. Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, leading the new interim government, faces immense challenges, including reforming governance, curbing corruption, and addressing widespread economic problems like youth unemployment.

Bangladesh's political instability is rooted in decades of power struggles between the Awami League and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). These tensions have fueled polarization, with nationalist rhetoric dominating the political landscape. The recent revolution was also catalyzed by longstanding dissatisfaction with the veterans' quota system, which reserved government jobs for descendants of freedom fighters, limiting opportunities for the younger generation. As Bangladesh steps into this new era, concerns about security, religious extremism, and economic crises persist. Will this revolution mark the dawn of a new political chapter, or will Bangladesh be pulled back into its turbulent past?
