You might have seen Japanese katana trainees tie these strings to their hakama or obi. Some people say it’s meant to keep the katana in your hakama when you use Tsuka techniques to fight. But if your scabbard is too short, it really wouldn’t matter. If you look at old illustrations of samurai, you can see that they hardly ever tied their sageo to their hakama. Then why do many Ryuha styles still tie them?
There are various theories, but I was taught the more spiritual aspect. Since ancient times, it has been believed in Japan that katanas hold deity, and strings are believed to have the power to connect the spiritual power of the katana. That is why various strings exist in sacred places such as shrines and temples. In other words, it is believed that by tying Sageo string, one can possess the spiritual power of katana.
Considering that iai was originally practiced to protect the dignity of the samurai rather than for combat purposes, it is not surprising that it has this kind of spiritual meaning. What do you think? Please let me know in the comments.
