Okay the long awaited wait is over and here is my brutally honest review of Final Fantasy XVI after playing the game through once by also doing all sidequests and hunt board bounties. Final Fantasy XVI is an action role-playing game that was developed and published by Square Enix in 2023. It serves as the sixteenth main installment in the Final Fantasy series and was initially released exclusively for the PlayStation 5 for a limited time.
The game introduces segmented open environments that players can explore, along with an engaging combat system that combines melee and magic-based attacks. Familiar elements from the series, such as Chocobos and summoned monsters known as Eikons, make a return. These Eikons can be encountered as powerful bosses and harnessed by the player to unleash their abilities in combat.
The story of Final Fantasy XVI unfolds in the fictional world of Valisthea, which is divided among six nations. The nations derive their power from magical Crystals and Dominants, individuals who serve as hosts for the Eikons associated with each nation. The protagonist, Clive Rosfield, assumes the role of guardian for his younger brother Joshua. He witnesses the destruction of his kingdom and becomes embroiled in the escalating conflict among the nations of Valisthea. Unbeknownst to him, the source of this conflict is tied to the dark Eikon Ifrit, and a secret power behind the war is gradually revealed.
