I'm Larry Gimple, an interventional cardiologist in the University of Virginia Health System. I specialize in taking care of patients who have heart attacks, especially ones who may need coronary interventions in the cardiac cath lab. My goal is to build trust with patients and their families. We often meet patients at the most challenging times in their lives. We build trust by offering a safe environment for patients and their families to meet their doctors and nurses, to discuss their problems, and to feel they are not hurried to make decisions. I'll get to know each patient and give them the information, support, time, and compassion that they deserve.
Over my career, wonderful discoveries and new therapies have been developed. I'll never forget the first heart attack patient that I cared for in Boston in the 1980s. He was a younger man who was getting sicker and sicker, and I quickly realized the limitations of the therapies that we could offer back then. If you fast-forward to today, we can often intervene and stop a heart attack in its tracks, and we can do it quickly with our skilled and dedicated team. UVA Health has amazing people who are united in a common goal of compassionately helping our patients and their families by always being on the cutting edge of medicine. We provide a staggering array of expertise, knowledge, and wisdom, and we can do it compassionately for each patient, one at a time.
