The off-grid adventure: Nature, vibes and great food ===========================================
Once an Arawak settlement with a shocking colonial history, today the mountain region is dotted with small villages and large agriculture farms. Our journey starts at Caura Junction and snakes along tree-canopied roads bounded by ravines and distant mountain ridges. Past the hospital, water treatment plant and the abandoned pumphouse at Pool One, the scenery opens up into at true valley with lush fields of eggplant and papaya on either side of the road. Suddenly the pitch road ends, and gives way to a river crossing where we'll engage 4 X 4 and drive along a rocky road and across tributaries until we reach Mr Bat's farm. Maybe you've seen Mr Bat on YouTube. Interesting guy. Sage-like. Loves history and Westerns. At seventy-two years old, he still works the land and climbs trees. Mountains surround his home, there's no electricity, no hum of refrigerators, no cellular service. The only sound is the sound of nature at work: birds, wildlife, the nearby river that winds around the property. Walk the land, learn gardening techniques with Mr Bat, chat over a cup of coffee, or, if you like, you can walk along the bench road that leads to Blanchisseuse, or you can just sit and soak in the atmosphere, the surreal quiet.

Before lunch we'll hike to Mr Harry's farm. If you're wearing sneakers you may have to remove them to wade across the river in knee-high water. Then you're walking a road established in the 1800s when Caura was a major player in the cocoa industry. There're remnants of infrastructure built on the backs of indigenous people, slaves and indentured labourers. A rugged path slopes up to Mr Harry's country house. Smoke from a chulha curls skyward as you walk up a sloped lined with tropical plants and flowers, and without knowing why you're suddenly hungry. Maybe Mr Harry is picking limes, hopefully, he's already cooking lunch: plantains, fry bake, cassava; ital food, food from the land. Did we mention that Mr Harry makes local wines? Maybe he'll teach you his secret recipe. Maybe you'll run into The Ghost of Caura.

Prices are quoted in TTD and are per group.
