The name "JAPANESE FREEWAY" was given in remembrance of Japan's support to the rehabilitation road project of the 'Somalia Drive' right after civil war and first election held in 2005.
When Liberia's iron lady Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf began president in 2005, Japan came in to as a friendly nation to see what they could do to help Liberia as an undeveloped country which suffered from civil conflict.
During their searched they found that Liberia's most needed at the time was rehabilitation and construction of roads in the nation.
They chose to rehabilitate the Somalia Drive Road which is a major road that connects the National Port of Liberia to Red-light and other areas.
