In this video, I walk you through how to take a simple PDF map and turn it into a georeferenced map in CalTopo. Whether it’s a closure area, fire boundary, or other public land updates, I show you the easiest way to overlay a PDF map with real coordinates, making it possible to see exactly where trails and areas of interest fall within these boundaries. This method requires a CalTopo Pro account, and while there are free ways to do it, this approach has been by far the simplest, especially if you want to export maps that include location data.
Starting with a basic closure map from the Forest Service, I guide you through saving, importing, and calibrating it using CalTopo’s “Map Sheet” tool. This lets you match up the map’s points with real-world coordinates, so it overlays accurately. For maps without embedded geospatial data, like some image posts, I also demonstrate how to set reference points manually and get a usable georeferenced map that you can then download or print with your own customized layers and markers.
If you’re new to CalTopo, it's a powerful tool used by search and rescue teams and government agencies alike, and a lot of its features are free to use. Check it out if you’re into map planning or just want an easy way to track changes to public land. If you found this helpful, leave a comment or share your own tips, and stay tuned for my upcoming video on Avenza Maps, another handy platform for working with georeferenced PDFs.
