Setting up the Hyper Key on your Mac

Karabiner-Elements one of the best free Mac automation apps. Use the Caps Lock as a Hyperkey.

In the previous video not been showing how to activate Hook using the caps lock key to simulate pressing shift, control, option and command keys all at the same time. There are a couple of ways setting up the caps lock key to do this and I found the easiest way to do it is to get your hands on the application Karabiner – Elements.

Go to the website https://karabiner-elements.pqrs.org/and download the application.

When you open the downloaded file your get a PK G file and you just have to follow the prompts to install the software. Open up the application. Use Launchpad or double-clicking on the application in the applications folder. You will have to go to the security and privacy system settings to click on the Allow button. It’s all very simple you just have to follow the prompts.

Then in the application Karabiner-Elements we can immediately go to the tab for complex modifications. Click on the button in the bottom left ankle to Add Rule. There are three examples in there and we want to use the top one. This is the one to change the caps lock to the equivalent of the finger mangling combination of command plus control plus option plus shift. All you have to do is to click on the button Enable. and the job is done. It’s so much easier to set up a set of keyboard shortcuts using this magic key combination.

If you already have lots of keyboard shortcuts set up using the modified keys of control, option and command in various combinations it is pretty useful to have the one single key which gives you all four modifier keys.

There are other things you can do with the Karabiner-Elements application. For example you might want to set the right command key to get you to mission control. This saves you from having to use the function key with F3. It depends on whether you use that won’t command key often or not. I don’t use it for anything so it works well for me. I also have the right option key set up so that it does a delete forward. Which is another fairly useful keyboard hack.

If you have Better Touch Tool you can set up the caps lock to be the hyper- key. Only if you haven’t already set it up with Karabiner-Elements. I turned off the complex modification to try setting it up in Better Touch Tool and I was able to set up the hyper- key. The extra automation I set up with KeySmith stopped working so I didn’t have access to the hyper- key plus K to give me the markdown link by stringing together two shortcut keys combinations.
