John Stratton, PhD. will explore cutting edge research on the idea that we need to work on a middle ground of tools and programmer effort, in order to make performance really work.

Traditionally, we either make the programmer do everything (DSP platforms) or we assume the programmer will do nothing (fully automatic parallelization.) However, the way forward really has to look at this middle ground of giving programmers tools to target heterogeneous systems that are easy to use. John will include insight into his current research – an example of introducing slight hardware inefficiencies or overheads to accommodate productive software development practices.

After this talk, you will be equipped to identify the features that enable grassroots adoption of a development platform. You will be able to convince developers to write libraries for your platform, and application developers to use those libraries effectively, by understanding and delivering development tools that they can use effectively.
