This video goes into detail on the types of plugins that you can use to create a fuller, richer, and fatter vocal sound. It goes beyond EQ and Compression to really help you bring your vocals out.

The vocal processes that are used are a saturator, that can be used to create warmth, either from tube emulation or tape emulation to create a subtle distortion that can be pleasing to the ears. The Black Box Analog emulator is used here, from Plugin Alliance.

The second plugin is an audio exciter, or more often referred to as an aural exciter. This can bring crispness and clarity to the vocal track. The plugin used here is the Novaltech Vocal Enhancer, but this can be done with any exciter.

The send effects, beyond the reverb include using a delay to create a wetter and wider sound. Any stock delay will be able to accomplish this.

The last effect is a pitch shifter. This will be used to create width to the vocal track and make it pop through with a 3D effect.

These techniques can be used with any music software: Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Ableton Live, FL Studio, Bitwig, Cubase, and any others.

Created and presented by Lorne Bregitzer, an Associate Professor at the University of Colorado Denver in the College of Arts & Media.
