We typically think of functions as having a symbolic formula like f(x) = 2x +. 3. While it's often possible to find a symbolic formula for a function, often we start with a description like "the function that describes the x-coordinate of a particle moving on a circle", or "the function that describes the temperature in our city on day t (out of 365)".
