Today’s politics can inspire serious doubts about whether we really live in the „best of all possible worlds“, as the philosopher Leibniz said. His colleague, the French philosopher and writer Voltaire was obviously so freaked out by this statement that he wrote a a novel with the express purpose of proving the contrary - CANDIDE OR OPTIMISM. Without giving away too much: Young Candide is getting thoroughly disillusioned in the course of the story. Then again, Voltaire at least offers a way out of the trap of pessimism - oh, just tune in and see for yourself, will you?
