This iSight camera has the cheese grater aesthetic because it was released on the same day as the PowerMac G5 which is famous for its cheese grater appearance. Steve jobs announced it on the same day at WWDC in 2003.
The built in shutter means there's a built in way to make it impossible for people to spy on you through the camera. Steve jobs said "No peeping toms" at the release. I thought that was a funny quote. I found myself watching the whole iSight announcement portion of WWDC since Steve Jobs was such a compelling and interesting speaker. Far from the stale corporate boring emotionless monotone that apple gives out now.
