What is a UPS bypass and why is synchronising one with the inverter output key to ensure no break transfer?
Riello UPS’s Technical Services Manager Jason Yates offers an overview of how a static bypass works in a dual conversion #onlineUPS system.
Jason outlines the main scenarios when a UPS will transfer to static bypass, whether that be faults or failures with the rectifier or inverter, or when an engineer manually switches to bypass mode during UPS maintenance.
The #TechTalk video also explains the main components of a UPS bypass, including the static switch, the battery, and the thyristor.
Jason goes on to describe the importance of UPS bypass synchronisation in order to guarantee seamless no break power transfer when switching to bypass.
Using an oscilloscope, he shows how waveforms look like when they are in sync or not, also known as in-phase or out of phase.
If the output voltage waveform from the #UPSsystem inverter isn’t synchronised with the supply voltage waveform from the bypass switch, the system wouldn’t be able to instantaneously transfer to bypass.
