Today we relax on a tiny tropical island just west of Bora Bora in French Polynesia. Welcome to Île de Maupiti. This piece of paradise is one of the most natural places we have visited yet.
Here, there are no big businesses or even hotels. "If there are no hotels, how do you stay on Maupiti?," you might wonder. The answer is "pensions." Pensions are guesthouses, usually owned by Polynesian families.
With warm and friendly service, your stay often includes breakfast and dinner and, depending on the pension, you may have the choice of renting a bungalow on the grounds, a room in the main house or the option to camp on the property.
The pension we picked was Fare Pae'ao. Owned and operated by Nelson and his kind family, Fare Pae'ao is on a motu all its own just north of the main island of Maupiti. Isolated and tranquil, this is paradise at its most pristine.
You can walk the island, hang out in a hammock, snorkel the sea and one thing that will jump out at you? The ocean life is nothing short of amazing!
