In the lecture we will derive the Theorem of Total Potential Energy and demonstrate the application to the Euler Bernoulli beam for thr case of moderate rotations and small strains. We then use the 1st Castigliano's Theorem to solve a truss problem.
This course will demonstrate the use of variational principles to derive governing equations but to also find approximate solutions to these equations. Applications will range structural mechanics, heat transfer, and potential flow. The theory of this course serves as the basis for finite elements.
