In the 1950s, Chevrolet produced three models that have become highly sought after by car enthusiasts worldwide. They are the 1955, 1956, and 1957 models. Fletch takes us through the history of these iconic cars.

The 1955 Chevrolet was a standout model with front-to-back restyling and engineering, three engine and transmission options, tubeless tires, and a lower centre of gravity. A badge below the rear taillights only identified the V8 model. It was a popular model, with 1.8 million vehicles built, and came with various options such as 19 different 2-tone colours and plastic seat covers. Brightwork was a feature of these models, along with the double hump dash allowing easy conversion to right-hand drive.

Chris, a 567 Chevrolet Car Club of NSW member, joined Fletch to showcase his 1955 Chevrolet, a stunning example he imported in 2011 with complete paperwork on the vehicle's history.

The '56 Chevrolet was built upon the success of the '55 model, with a new grill, additional brightwork and the hidden gas filler behind the left-hand taillight.

Fletch introduces Alan, the proud owner of a '56 model, which was initially a taxi in Queensland before being purchased by his father and then passed down to him. The car is in good condition with original paint and engine, with only minor replacements to the wipers and upholstery.

As iconic as the '55 and '56 models were, it was the '57 Chevrolet that genuinely reached new heights in terms of styling. It featured a bold new front grill, sleek rear fin treatment, and more brightwork. As well as polished sheeted trim work down each rear quarter, a new fluted hood was a unique mascot for the marque, complete with moulded hood sections finished with ornate gunsight chrome plate spears.

James' Belair model '57 4-door pillarless coupe, complete with power steering, electric windows, electric wipers, power brakes, and twin bumper overriders, was considered the top of the line. When James was looking for a '57 Chev, he planned to create a 'fully blown' Chevy, but when the car was delivered, it was just too good to do that to it, and so began a complete restoration. Today, it's his pride and joy; others admire the beautiful restoration, which gives him great satisfaction.
