5 Interesting Facts about Musk Oxen:

1. Ancient Survivors
Musk oxen are one of the oldest living species, having roamed the Earth since the Pleistocene era. They coexisted with woolly mammoths and saber-toothed cats and have survived for thousands of years despite dramatic climate changes.

2. Thick, Warm Coats
Musk oxen have an incredibly thick coat made up of two layers: a dense, woolly undercoat called qiviut, and a longer, coarse outer layer of guard hairs. Qiviut is one of the warmest natural fibers in the world, about eight times warmer than sheep’s wool, and is highly prized for making clothing.

3. Defensive Formations
When threatened by predators like wolves, musk oxen form a defensive circle or line, with the calves in the middle and the adults facing outward, horns ready. This behavior protects the young and vulnerable members of the herd from attacks.

4. Strong Social Bonds
Musk oxen live in herds that can range from a few individuals to up to 30 or more. They exhibit strong social bonds and cooperate closely to protect each other from predators. Their social structure is matriarchal, with females often leading the herd.

5. Unique Scent Glands
Musk oxen get their name from the strong musky odor produced by scent glands located near the eyes of males. This musky scent is used during the rutting season to attract females and establish dominance among males.
