Paul Mescal plays a warrior in Ridley Scott's Gladiator II. Mescal's "Roman" nose fits the role. The first trailer will release on July 9. Ridley Scott chose Mescal after seeing him in Normal People. They quickly agreed on Mescal's role during a short Zoom call. Pedro Pascal and Denzel Washington also star in the movie.
Several decades after the events of Gladiator (2000), Lucius - the grandson of Rome's former emperor Marcus Aurelius and son of Lucilla - lives with his wife and child in Numidia. Roman soldiers led by general Marcus Acacius invade, forcing Lucius into slavery. Inspired by the story of Maximus, Lucius resolves to fight as a gladiator while opposing the rule of the young emperors Caracalla and Geta.
The sequel continues the story years after Russell Crowe's Maximus. Mescal's character, Lucius, now an adult, struggles with Rome's corruption. His mother, Lucilla, sent him to Numidia for safety. When Rome invades, Lucius is captured and discovers his mother is still alive.
The movie explores themes of survival, power struggles, and familial connections. The film highlights the impact of power on people, and Lucius' anger towards Rome drives much of the plot. Denzel Washington's character, Macrinus, is an arms dealer with a stable of gladiators. Fred Hechinger and Joseph Quinn play corrupt Roman emperors.
Paul Mescal plays Lucius Verus, who has been living in isolation for 15 years, disconnected from his mother.
Denzel Washington portrays Macrinus, a former slave turned wealthy merchant with a grudge against the emperors.
Pedro Pascal is Marcus Acacius, a former Roman general forced into gladiatorial combat as punishment.
Connie Nielsen reprises her role as Lucilla, the mother of Lucius.
Joseph Quinn plays co-emperor Geta, aiming for a distinct portrayal despite comparisons to Joaquin Phoenix's Commodus in the first film.
The story reflects Scott's personal history and his views on power and chaos. The film is set to release on November 22.
