A Transparency Mask: allows you to control transparency through the creation of a second layer linked to whichever layer you currently have selected —which controls opacity —by mapping it to the value you put down on the second layer..(Alt + Click to see the layer) Opacity can be altered by painting on the transparency mask or by adjusting the layer opacity of the image layer.
A transparency mask is best when you want to non-destructively erase.
