Relative, Absolute and Mixed cell reference in Excel
Knowing Relative, Absolute and Mixed cell reference in Excel is one of the basic but most important skills to have in Excel. If one understood these concepts properly then one can apply formulas in Excel in a better way and in less time.
In Relative cell reference, cell reference or cell address used in formula automatically changes after copy-pasting. This is the default type of cell reference in Excel when formula cell and cell reference is of same workbook. Example A1
In Absolute cell reference, cell reference does not change after copy pasting. Absolute cell reference makes cell address locked or fixed. By using this you can keep a cell fixed in a formula.
Press F4 function key one time to convert into absolute reference from relative one.Dollar sign ($) before row and column indicates reference is absolute. Example $A$1
Mixed cell reference is of two types
Only row absolute - In this only row is fixed or absolute. Press F4 key two times to make row absolute form relative cell reference. Example A$1
Only column absolute - In this only column is fixed or absolute. Press F4 key three times to make column absolute form relative cell reference. Example $A1
