The process of air flowing into the lungs is governed by the creation of a pressure gradient between the air outside the body and the air inside the lungs. This gradient is established through the mechanics of breathing, primarily involving the diaphragm and intercostal muscles.

The diaphragm, a dome-shaped muscle at the base of the lungs, contracts and flattens during inhalation, increasing the thoracic cavity's volume. Simultaneously, the intercostal muscles contract, raising the rib cage and further expanding the chest. This expansion causes the pressure inside the thoracic cavity to drop below atmospheric pressure, creating a negative pressure environment. According to Boyle’s Law, as the volume of a gas increases, its pressure decreases, driving air into the lungs.

Air moves from areas of higher pressure (outside the body) to lower pressure (inside the lungs) through the respiratory tract, which includes the nose or mouth, pharynx, larynx, trachea, and bronchi. Air eventually reaches the alveoli, tiny structures where gas exchange occurs. Oxygen diffuses into the blood, while carbon dioxide is expelled during exhalation.

This entire process is regulated by the respiratory center in the brainstem, ensuring that the body’s oxygen and carbon dioxide levels remain balanced. Through the rhythmic contraction of respiratory muscles and pressure differentials, the flow of air into the lungs enables vital gas exchange, crucial for sustaining life.
