The main target of new spending in this Budget was the poorest in society - those struggling on unemployment benefits, or finding it impossible to pay the rent or visit the doctor. Labor says there are some measures that will help middle Australia. And with the Stage 3 tax cuts remaining in place, it's trying to keep faith with those at the top as well. All this – and a surplus to boot – made it a hard Budget for the Coalition to attack.
Liberals certainly tried, calling it inflationary and divisive. They want to blame the government for any further rise in interest rates. But by the end of the week it was clear, there's little in this Budget Peter Dutton will oppose. David Speers interviews Treasurer Jim Chalmers about the plan moving forward. Andrew Probyn, Jennifer Hewett, and Shane Wright discuss the issues of the week. Mike Bowers talks the week in pictures with David Pope.
