3. Slow Adoption in Large Enterprises: Even if AI tools were ready to replace developers, large enterprises and governments are slow to change. The vetting process, designing internal processes, training, and implementation could take years.
4. Consumer Power: If society worries about AI replacing workers, consumers can punish companies that replace humans with AI at scale. Engaging politically and pressuring governments to enact regulations and safety nets for displaced workers could also impact AI adoption.
Despite these challenges, learning to code in 2024 is still valuable. The skills and mindset developed through software development are transferable to other domains. The future is bright for those who develop these skills rather than relying on AI shortcuts.
In the future, the greatest demand will likely be for people who can collaborate with, monitor, and quality-check AI tools while also possessing the soft skills to collaborate with other humans to ensure that what is being built is valuable and integrates reliably into the software stack. This will require deep knowledge, so if you're early career and using AI as a crutch, you are going to be at-risk.
