2023 Renault Zoe Review: Electric supermini tested
The Renault Zoe is an electric car pioneer. The first generation of this electric supermini was launched in 2012, long before many other manufacturers even had an EV strategy. This second generation Zoe followed in 2020, and with it came a much improved range and faster charging – not that you'd know it was new, because it looks almost identical to the original. Then, in 2021 Renault faced disaster with its small EV when the Zoe recorded a 0/5 score in EuroNCAP's industry standard crash tests.
Come 2023, then, the Zoe is going to need much more than its status as a pioneer if it's going to compete against an ever increasing number of new EVs. There's the MINI, Peugeot e-208, Vauxhall Corsa Electric, MG4, and Honda e, never mind the growing range of small electric crossovers that this little Renault needs to beat. Thanks to its 52kWh battery, great efficiency, and 239-mile official range, the Zoe still looks interesting on paper, but as Rebecca Jackson discovers in this CarGurus UK review, it is starting to lag behind rivals in more than just crash test scores.
