Former Northern Ireland, Southampton and Aston Villa defender has died at 77.

The English-born 77-year-old started his career at Burnley but is best remembered for spells at Aston Villa and Southampton.

He was Saints manager for six years and Walsall boss from 1994 to 1997.

Nicholl made his international debut in 1974 and won 51 caps for Northern Ireland.

He was part of the Northern Ireland team which reached the World Cup finals in 1982.

"We are saddened to learn of the passing of Chris Nicholl. He played 51 times for us, including the 1982 World Cup in Spain. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time," the Irish Football Association wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Nicholl also played for Halifax Town, Luton Town and Grimsby Town in a professional career spanning 19 years.

He died two days ago on the 24th. His birthday was last October on the 12th, 2023.

Christopher John Nicholl was an English professional footballer who later worked as a coach and manager. A centre-back, Nicholl began his playing career at Burnley, but moved to Witton Albion after failing to break into the Burnley team.
