Normal labor has three stages:
1. Stage 1 (12-19 hours): The baby moves lower into the pelvis, the cervix widens, and contractions become stronger and regular. This stage includes lower back pain, mucus plug discharge, and possibly the water breaking. Transfer to the labor room may be needed.
2. Stage 2 (20 min - 2 hours): The cervix fully opens to about 10 cm, the baby's head enters the birth canal, and the mother pushes during contractions. The baby's head crowns, and sometimes a small incision (episiotomy) may be made to aid delivery.
3. Stage 3: Mild contractions help the placenta to exit the uterus. Encouraging bonding through skin contact and breastfeeding is important. The umbilical cord is then cut. These stages describe a typical labor process.
