In the next installment of our series, Language of the Image, we take a close look at the work of Rachel Morrison, who just this year became the first woman to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Cinematography, for Mudbound. From her roots in indie documentaries, which she considers her version of film school, to her forays into the big budget world of Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther, Morrison is an adept portraitist of emotion. Yet, she is also highly adaptable and inventive; no two films in her career share the same visual style. We can’t wait to see how her work evolves as she continues to take on bigger and more elaborate projects.
