Donald Trump, the former president of the United States, was the target of an assassination attempt during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13, 2024. The attack occurred just days before he was set to become the official Republican presidential nominee.
The assailant, identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old man from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, fired at least five shots, one of which pierced the upper part of Trump’s right ear. The Secret Service responded swiftly, resulting in the death of the would-be assassin.
In the chaos, one spectator was killed and two others were critically injured. Trump was quickly shielded by agents and was seen with a bloodied face before being escorted off the stage. He was then checked into a medical facility.
The motive behind the attack remains under investigation. This incident marks the most serious attempt to assassinate a president or presidential candidate since Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981. Trump, in a statement, thanked the Secret Service and law enforcement, and extended his condolences to the family of the person killed at the rally.
