The Nat King Cole Show - Nat sings "It's a good day"

Nathaniel Adams Coles, known professionally as Nat King Cole (March 17, 1919 - February 15, 1965) was a popular American singer, songwriter, and jazz pianist. The first black musician to ever have a weekly radio and television show. The first episode of The Nat King Cole Show aired 5 November 1956 -Cole had survived for over a year, and it was he, not NBC, who ultimately decided to pull the plug on the show. NBC and Nat had been operating at an extreme financial loss due to the lack of sponsorship his show received.

He often smoked three packs of cigarettes a day during his lifetime. Unfortunately, it led to his death from lung cancer at the much too young age of 45.
Films:

The Blue Gardenia (1953)
China Gate (1957) (actor and singer - "Three Coins in the Fountain" during the opening credits.)

Winner of a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Grammy award in 1989. Incredibly enough, he was nominated for a Grammy only once in his lifetime, in 1958, and lost.

In 1956, while giving a concert in Birmingham, Alabama, he was attacked onstage by two members of a white racist organization called the White Citizens Council and sustained injuries to his back.
Addressed the Republican National Convention in 1956.
Attended the Democratic National Convention in 1960.
Performed at President John F. Kennedy's inauguration on 20 January 1961.
