Over 2023 I have had space to reconnect to my arts practice and myself in new ways, that integrate my life as a mum, as a person with ADHD inattentive type and as a lifelong arts practitioner. With so much change in a short time span how my work is informed has grown and vague identifiers I've used such as being an 'emotive artist' don't seem to tell enough of a story.
In the hunt for my brightest passion fires I have returned, of all places, to death. The universal experience, the unknown and the strong emotive catalyst that captivates me even when medicated to stabilise my brains intense, sudden and unpredictable vulnerabilities.
Through extensive resources provided by @ordergooddeath @thegooddeath @unilibrary and so many more individual creators, death care industry workers & artists I have cultivated a labyrinth of questions and pursuits I want to work through and make work about
To start, my allegorical characters will embody my fascination, this piece is Alkaline hydrolysis, she is water cremation, she is Aquamation. Placing the deceased in a vessel of water and an alkali-based solution, it reduces the body to bone fragments and ash that can be scattered, interred or kept just like flame based cremation. Aquamation also produces no direct emissions; and when powered by renewable energy, is almost entirely carbon-neutral. Death care has come a long way and there is so much to talk about.
I look forward to the conversations
