Polynomials may be added or subtracted by combining the like terms.

The degree of the sum or difference of polynomials is less than or equal to the highest degree of the polynomials involved in the sum or difference. For example, if the degree of P(x) is 5 and the degree of Q(x) is 3, then the degree of P(x) + Q(x) must be less than or equal to 5.

When adding or subtracting polynomials, the second (subsequent) polynomials should be enclosed in brackets. e.g. if P(x) = 5x + 1 and Q(x) = 2x + 11, then P(x) - Q(x) should be written as 5x + 1 - (2x + 11) before any simplification.
