Our Karen guide Jarun brought us to Huay Yuak village. A seldom visited village in the hills surrounding Chiang Mai. The Karen we met welcomed us into their homes and gave us a glimpse at their everyday lives.
Unfortunately, many still live in refugee camps and some tourist villages don’t allow them to leave for work or school.
A defining trait that some have associated with the Karen people are long-necks or neck rings, however that’s just one subset of a subgroup of Karen and not representative of all Karen people.
I recommend hiring a local Karen guide if you’re interested in visiting the Karen people and learning about their history and culture.
