The QWERTY keyboard, named for the first six letters in the top row of the alphabet keys, has a storied history. Its invention is credited to Christopher Latham Sholes, an American newspaper editor and printer. In the 1860s, Sholes, along with Samuel Soule and Carlos Glidden, developed an early typewriter, later known as the Sholes and Glidden typewriter or the Remington No. 1. The machine marked the first commercially successful typewriter and introduced the QWERTY layout we know today... but why are the letters arranged like that?
