What is Wi-Fi Eavesdropping? Man In The Middle Attack
Wifi eavesdropping also sometimes known as an Evil Twin attack is a type of Man In The Middle Attack where an attacker inserts themselves into the middle of a connection or data transfer between a device and a server.
They are used to steal personal information such a bank details, card numbers, login credentials and gathering passwords for users accounts just to name a few.
Lets have a look at how they work.
If we use this diagram we can see the user is connecting to a server via a public wifi network to do some online banking. They send a request to the server and the server sends back the requested data as expected. A hacker will intercept the data by creating a free public Wi-Fi network that appears genuine. The user has now connected to what they think is a coffee shops free wifi, they are not aware that all traffic they are sending and receiving is completely visible to the attacker including the password and bank details they just entered giving the attacker full access to the victims bank account.
So how can we protect ourselves from Wifi Eavesdropping
The most effective way is to never use public wifi networks for any confidential or sensitive tasks including social media or banking.
Another way to protect yourself is to use a VPN or virtual private network which creates a secure tunnel for you to send and receive traffic. Preventing it from being intercepted in this kind of attack.
