15 August को Viceroy Lodge के Central Dome पर पहली बार तिरंगा (Tiranga) फहराया गया था। उसके बाद 16 August, 1947 को देश के पहले प्रधानमंत्री (India's First Prime Minister) ने तिरंगा फहराया था। Pingali Venkayya ने ही देश के पहले तिरंगे (First National Flag Designer) को डिजाइन किया था। Venkayya ने झंडे के लिए तकरीबन 25 डिजाइन चुने थे।
