To start, a pixel is just little dots that make up the picture on your screen. And monitor resolution is defined as the number of pixels that are on the screen and it's defined by the number of pixels going across versus the number of pixels going up. For example, the 720p resolution is 1280 by 720. So, you would get 720p from the number of pixels going up. The more pixels that you can fit on a screen, the sharper the image is going to be. Some of the more common screen resolutions would be 1080p and 4k. 1080p, which is the norm for most televisions and most laptops.1080p is actually 1920 pixels across and 1080 pixels high. Again, the 1080p comes from the number of pixels going up the screen. Also, for reference, 1080p compared to 720p there is going to be a more compact number of pixels making your image way sharper. Now, 4k is a screen resolution of 3840 by 2160 and for that screen resolution to be packed onto a screen like this, that image is going to be sharp. Now for the second part of screen resolution, aspect ratio. The aspect ratio is simply how wide the screen is versus how high it is. For example, a while ago laptops were originally a 4:3 aspect ratio which was referred to as a "box" screen and they came with a very low screen resolution. Compared to today, laptops come with an aspect ratio of 16:9 or commonly referred to as the widescreen which is great for higher screen resolutions.
