The dark horse of the Air B'n'Feast world, Latvia has floored me with the massive markets in Riga, the deep and storied history, the friendly people and the diverse architecture.
In this new season of Air B'n'Feast I kick things off with a visit to the beautiful Baltic country of Latvia. Tucked away in a quiet part of Europe, Latvia has a lot to offer. It's capital city, Riga, has a variety of areas that are great for exploring, from its Old Town, with it's cobbled streets, to the Art Nouveau district with its elaborate and beautiful architecture.
The impact of history unfolding over Latvia is evident, beautiful buildings from across years that have been altered and manipulated still stand today, and the effects of pre-1989 occupation still clear, but slowly fading.
The markets where I purchased my produce are UNESCO heritage sites; the four hangars in which the markets lie are old Zeppelin hangars, 4 of 9 left in the world!
There are stories to be told and heard in Latvia, its worth a visit for the history alone.
But then there is the food. My summer experience was a shock, with the markets TEEMING with vendors selling high quality ingredients of local and eastern origins. Everything was rich, so full of flavour! apparently the biggest open air market in Europe, the selection was an experimenters dream!
So yeah, definitely visit Latvia. It's off the beaten track at the moment (I don't think they've really tapped into the tourist potential yet) so get in now, and see it. The Latvian Open Air Ethnographic Museum is a must-see - absolute peace and quiet with very few people around, and you can even swing in for a Latvian brew.
