SAP S/4HANA ERP is an ERP platform that focuses on standardization rather than customization, resulting in an upgrade-friendly system that requires only a few modifications and expensive upgrades. This approach simplifies processes and maximizes the benefits of SAP's cloud-based services. Historically, SAP systems were modified to meet specific business requirements, leading to expensive and complicated procedures. However, the Clean Core approach provides an efficient, streamlined, and easily upgraded core ERP system, ensuring cost efficiency and allowing SAP to simplify its processes.

SAP S/4HANA Cloud introduces a standard method of customization, separates extensions for customization from the core system, providing stability and ease of upgrading. This method has been crucial for SAP to perform S/4HANA updates since the launch of RISE alongside SAP, allowing companies to focus on coordination and planning instead of executing technical tasks. The streamlined core system enables SAP to complete upgrade processes more efficiently, reducing downtime and complexity for both customers and the SAP system.

However, implementing a Clean Core approach poses challenges, such as gaps in awareness and skills, old custom codes, complex multi-functional applications, and API limitations. Despite these challenges, the Clean Core approach offers numerous benefits for SAP and its customers.

SAP's S/4HANA implementation aims to achieve a Clean Core, but a Lean Core can be beneficial for businesses. Before embarking on customized code remediation initiatives, businesses should consider whether built-in functions can replace custom business processes. The Simplification Inventory Catalogue lists the benefits of switching from ECC to S/4HANA and their pros and cons.

If a custom-designed development project is created on-premise or a quick conversion to S/4HANA is not possible, transferring the code via SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) services may be an option. SAP BTP offers tools like Build, Integration Suite, ABAP in the Cloud, and side-by-side extension, which allows custom development without having to be part of the SAP system while minimizing any impact.

Key principles for implementing a Clean Core include optimizing for zero core modifications, adopting standard business processes, consolidating common applications under a common data model or API set, using Key-User Extensibility Tools, replatforming decoupled custom developments, developing on-Stack extensions like Embedded Steampunk, and using secure communications contracts for communication between systems.

Benefits of a Clean Core approach include simplified upgrade processes, rapid adoption of new technologies, enhanced system security and stability, reduced Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), transparency, and accountability. To maintain a clean core, organizations should implement a zero-modification policy, leverage approved extensibility options, ensure upgrade stability using only upgrade-stable standard objects, and regularly assess and optimize custom code.
