This monstrous mix of reindeer and folk-lore legend Krampus is designed and animated by Norwich University of the Arts BA Animation Senior Lecturer Jon Dunleavy

Jon designs here in Procreate and transports the layers over to After Effects for a spot of jiggling about with keyframes to add some depth.

Jon breaks down his process below:

🔘 Sketch: always sketch and doodle
🔘 Shape: block out rough shapes in separate colours and layers, ignore colour for now
🔘 Colour and texture: Use a clipping mask to paint the shapes painted previously. Try things out, be brave. you can always change and tweak.
🔘 Texture: add a layer of dust particles, simple airbrush randomly placed
🔘 Glow: duplicate a layer (body) and blur it to make it glow
🔘 Noise: Add noise effect to a solid black layer on top. set the layer to screen, this adds a grain texture over the whole image
🔘 Tongue: Add tongue...remove the tongue. Confuses the image
🔘 Export: save as Photoshop (PSD) file and send to a computer
🔘 After Effects: import all the layers to After Effects
🔘 3D: make all layers 3D and separate them in z space (background, mid-ground and foreground)
🔘 Camera: add a camera and rotate it and make it loop
🔘 Wiggle: make the body glow opacity jitter with a wiggle expression
Effects: apply a chromatic aberration effect from @redgiantnews (great educational version available)
