How to install MS-DOS 3.31 and Windows 1.01 in VirtualBox (Read Description)
This video shows how to easily install MS-DOS 3.31 and Windows 1.01 in VirtualBox. I thought this would be a neat idea for a video considering today is 1.01's 35th anniversary.
Steps:
1. Go to https://copy.sh/v86/?profile=windows1 and click "Get Floppy Image."
2. Download MS-DOS 3.31 from https://winworldpc.com/product/ms-dos....
3. Make a VM for MS-DOS 3.31, use default DOS settings. Mount the disk in settings.
4. Run fdisk and pick default options for every prompt
5. Run format c: to format the disk, this will take a little while to complete.
6. Run the following commands: (Source: Comment on https://www.betaarchive.com/forum/vie...)
sys c:
md c:\dos
copy a:\ c:\dos
copy a:\command.com c:\
7. Remove the MS-DOS 3.31 floppy disk and reset the VM.
8. Optionally run "ver" in order to make sure 3.31 installed correctly.
9. Mount the windows1.img floppy disk. This disk contains all the files required by Windows 1.01 and can be copied to the C drive. This installation is set up for color graphics and mouse support.
10. Run "md c:/windows" then "copy a:/ c:/windows"
11. cd into the windows directory
12. Run "win" to start Windows 1.01
You now have a functioning Windows 1.01 install in VirtualBox. You can also optionally chose to boot to Windows 1.01 from the floppy disk, but I prefer having it installed on a drive with DOS in order to run DOS commands and install software from floppy disks.
