CMOS and other coin batteries run low after some time and need replacing. But how to check them correctly? It turned out that many batteries show good voltages but are still bad.
It is necessary to test batteries (not only coin cells) with an electric load connected to show their potential to deliver power. A high internal resistance may block current to flow but the battery still shows a good voltage.
My "tester" consists of a small 3V motor and a white LED in parallel. The white LED will only light up whan the voltage is more than ca. 2.5V. A good battery lets the motor spin fast and the LED glow bright.
