The name "Lerici" originates from the ancient term "Ilex," which was later transformed into "Ericee" and eventually "Lerici," referring to the holm oak trees that populated the area. This is also confirmed by the town’s coat of arms, which features a holm oak tree.

History: The earliest historical traces of Lerici date back to the Etruscan period (7th century BC), when it served as a natural harbor first for the Ligurians and later for the Romans. In the Middle Ages, Lerici became an important stop for pilgrims and merchants. It was ruled by the Bishop-Counts of Luni and later by the Republic of Genoa, which fortified the town and used it as a strategic base to control the Gulf of La Spezia. Lerici witnessed significant historical events, such as peace treaties, clashes between Genoa and Pisa, and the naval battle of Giglio in 1241.

Throughout the centuries, Lerici changed hands multiple times, including under the control of the Pisans, the Malaspina family, the Genoese, and even the Kingdom of France, before being permanently returned to Genoa in 1479. The town played an important role during the conflicts between the Guelphs and Ghibellines and in the military strategies of the Republic of Genoa.

Modern and Contemporary Era: In the 18th century, under Napoleon’s French rule, Lerici became part of the Ligurian Republic and later the French Empire. After Napoleon’s fall, it was incorporated into the Kingdom of Sardinia and eventually the Kingdom of Italy. During the 19th and 20th centuries, Lerici underwent territorial adjustments, including the incorporation of the hamlet of Tellaro in 1939.
