The HEAT or "High Explosive Anti-Tank" round is found on many types of anti-tank shells as well as Javelin and NLAW anti-tank missile systems.
The round uses a shape charge consisting of a copper bowl surrounded by a high explosive.
When the round hits the tank, the explosive deforms the copper into a jet traveling 9KM per second. This punches through the armor of the tanks. Once inside the tank, the copper, combined with metal from the armor of the tank bounce around inside the vehicle killing crewmen and detonating ammunition.
