YouTube has introduced a new feature called “Test & Compare” for thumbnails. This feature allows you to upload multiple thumbnails for the same video and lets YouTube test which one performs better. The best-performing thumbnail will then be automatically set for your video.
In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to set up and use this feature, and explain how YouTube uses “Watch Time Share” instead of CTR to determine the winning thumbnail. We'll also cover best practices for thumbnail testing and how to analyze your results.
Key features
Accessing the Feature: Enable advanced features in YouTube Studio to use the Test and Compare option.
Using the Feature: Upload up to 3 different thumbnails for new or existing videos. YouTube will test them to find the best performer.
Understanding Metrics: YouTube uses Watch Time Share to determine the winning thumbnail, focusing on viewer engagement rather than just clicks.
Analyzing Results: View detailed reports in the Reach tab of your video. Possible outcomes include a clear winner, a preferred thumbnail, or inconclusive results.
