The M8A1 is a modification based on the M5 tank, as a result, it has a small silhouette (although the vehicle seems elongated due to the short length of the hull, in fact this is not the case) and very good dynamic characteristics for a tank destroyer with almost complete absence of armor . Like all vehicles of its class, the turret traverse speed is very low, and its durability is less than that of single-tier tanks. The choice of weapons includes a howitzer, but its power is not enough to cause significant damage to medium and heavy tanks, which is important for tank destroyers. Therefore, you basically have to use long-barreled armor-piercing guns and inflict huge damage not in one shot with a long reload, but in 3-4 accurate shots in the same time. Taking this into account, it is highly not recommended to ride on tanks armed with short-barreled howitzers, exchange shots with enemies “shot for shot”, it is better not to show yourself to anyone at all or to be constantly on the move. A spotted M8A1, especially one standing still, will be destroyed very quickly.

There are also two top guns to choose from: 57 mm Gun M1 “hole puncher” - more accurate, faster-firing, with greater armor penetration, can be installed in a lighter base turret; or 3-inch AT Gun M7 - greater one-time damage, as well as greater penetration and damage with high-explosive shells. Can only be placed in the heavier top tower.

Two playing styles can be practiced on the M8A1:

A tank destroyer is what this vehicle is intended for. Involves ambush tactics. You can use both guns, preference is given to the 57 mm Gun M1 gun - it is more accurate for this. The M8A1 is actually a fairly low tank and can easily be hidden in the bushes. In battles of all levels in which it gets involved, this vehicle will be able to fire quite a lot of shells at the enemy before it is noticed and destroyed. Even in level VI battles, it can effectively support allies; if the shells do not penetrate the frontal armor of heavy opponents, then it is quite possible to knock down the tracks or simply stun the enemy with a hail of shells, which is facilitated by the rate of fire.
Active play - the implementation of good dynamic characteristics of the vehicle, is also implemented on the following machines in the branch (T67, M18 Hellcat), and therefore you can practice active play on the M8A1. It is also possible to use both guns, and again preference is given to the stock turret and the 57 mm Gun M1 gun - they are lighter, and therefore the M8A1 will have a little more speed and maneuverability, in addition, the gun is faster-firing, which plays a big role. In this tactic, the tank destroyer will be used similarly to its “relative” - the M5. At the beginning of the battle, it is better not to show up right away, especially if the car is in the middle or at the bottom of the list. It’s better to correctly assess the situation on the battlefield and play for some time as a tank destroyer. It’s best to wait until the enemy’s ranks thin out and, if you’re lucky, paths to their rear open up. Then the M8A1 can go destroy artillery, help allies by shooting the enemy in the rear, spin lone clumsy tanks, or simply conduct active reconnaissance. In general, play as if the M8A1 were a light or medium tank. If you take into account the lack of armor, a small margin of safety and a slowly rotating turret and not exposing yourself, this tactic is almost completely justified; it is worth trying for those who liked this vehicle and who left it in the hangar.
Advantages:
good review;
presence of a tower;
excellent gun aiming angles;
good maneuverability;
small dimensions;
choice of two worthy weapons.
Flaws:
an open turret increases vulnerability to land mines and does not allow for improved ventilation;
weak armor;
low turret rotation speed.
