As Eye Eye toyed away on his debut record in 1995 - his father would pass away in his late 50’s due to liver cancer. . He’d remark in numerous interviews that keeping the music simple was one of the best lessons he learned from his father. The title track, “Desireless” is a cover of a song by Cherry's late father Cherry would admit he would have included a song from his father had he still been alive at the time of recording the record, but the title track had a particular sentimental meaning for him as it was the first song he learned to play on piano from his father at the age of 7. The approach Cherry took to Desireless was meant to be low-key. But life had other plans. The song Save Tonight, which was one of the last songs written for the album and an anomaly on the record would become a worldwide hit.

Eagle Eye would admit he wrote the song on a warm saturday. He was supposed to play soccer that day, but opted to stay home and wrote the song instead. He wanted to write something upbeat and uptempo for a his mostly mellow debut record. He would tell an interviewer he knew it was a special track recalling

I could feel that it was a catchy song. The reason it only has four cords is because I didn’t know what I was doing. I was like, I didn’t even think like you could put in a bridge or something! I’d just started really figuring the acoustic guitar out, and the acoustic guitar was kind of the key to finding my sound. He would later admit to the national post that he initially thought the song was corny and that he was a little anxious that he may have stolen the guitar riff from someone else, thinking it was too good. As for what the song meant he woul reveal to the courier post.

“Save Tonight’ is about saving the moment and making the best of it.” In an example of life imitating art - the song is autobiographical - seeing him frequently leave his then girlfriend to hit the road to tour behind his album. He would tell billboard “”you want the last night to be perfect, The single describes what i need for romance - wine, candlelight, a fireplace. If you make it memorable, you can survive away time.”

Save Tonight was a hit in over a dozen countries with the black and white music video seeing Cherry playing multiple characters being made for well under $20K. The song first got attention in scandinavia, then by late 1998 it got more attention across the rest of europe and Cherry soon sign a deal with Sony Records with desireless eventually coming out stateside. ”

The song would end up peaking at number 2 in america on the hot 100 chart in january of 1999 - a year and a half after his debut album came out. He’d also have another hit wit hfalling in love in mostly european markets. Desireless would go platinum in America and sold 4 million copies worldwide.

Cherry soon was thrust into the spotlight, something he never expected. Save Toinght would be nominated for a grammy - losing out to eric clapton. But at the grammy’s he would meet producer Rick Rubin who praised his debut record and wanted to co- produce his follow up, which he did. He’d also be nominated for two british awards for foreign male artist of the year and international newcomer of the year.
