Scheele's green was a popular clothing dye invented by a Swedish chemist. The emerald shade it produced was beautiful, but unfortunately also deadly poisonous. The arsenic used to create the dye caused oozing rashes on those who wore it, and was often fatal to those factory workers who produced it.

The radium girls were women who stepped up to work in factories during WW1. The girls used radium to paint watch faces so they would glow in the dark. Unknown at the time was how toxic radium was. Exposure caused the girls to experience rotting teeth, brittle bones and deadly tumors. Girls sometimes coated their teeth with the deadly paint so they would glow in the dark as a joke.

At the end of the 19th century it was fashionable for men to wear very high and stiff shirt collars. On more than one occasion men died due to these stiff collars being so tight that it cut off their circulation.
